Adding Texture

It’s not a mystery that a solid wardrobe is full of classic, basic pieces. These garments should be timeless, easy pieces. I own basic pieces, I just rarely wear them together. I tend to get a little heavy handed with the fun stuff when I style an outfit—like pattern, color, accessories, etc. For today’s look, I used another trick to liven up this outfit of essentials—texture.

The element of texture in fashion is one of my favorites. I’m always looking for ways to integrate it—a chunky knit sweater, velvet shoes, or tweed are all great ways to add texture to an outfit. This element is especially effective in the fall and winter because of all the layering one can do.

Both my dress and top were basics, so I used accessories to add texture. These tights by Merona (sold at Target for around $7) are perfect for creating visual interest. I also added my favorite vintage broach for a different textural element. By adding these pieces, I took what could easily be a boring basics outfit and made it my own.

Thriftfully Yours,
B
